new vacation picture soon [Jan. 5th, 2007|10:37 pm]

[Current Music |KT Tunstall - Miniature Disasters]

I was browsing my usual sites tonight (really, I still do check LiveJournal, I just don't update :)), and I realized that hardly anybody outside of work and some of my friends back home have heard that Kris and I are leaving for the Dominican in 3 days. Yay! :D

Shortly before Christmas (hope everyone had a good one btw) Kris and I booked an all-inclusive 7-day trip to Puerto Plata. We leave fly out of Halifax on Monday the 8th at 9am, and don't get back into Halifax til 9pm on Monday the 15th. What's even cooler is that the day we fly out is actually our 2 year anniversary. How romantic eh?

Anyways, I gotta go do some packing. We've got a lot of little stuff to get ready by tomorrow. We head back to Moncton tomorrow, where we'll leave the cats with Kris' parents. I promise I'll take a lot of pictures though! I might even post some! ;) We already had a 512MB card to use down there in our digital camera, but I was just lent two others today from a friend at work. In exchange, I'm supposed to bring him back some Dominican cigars. Anyways, if you're not too jealous, wish us some good weather!

Boo to Dawn and Lisa... now I have to update. :)

Hmm... what's new...? We'll start with tonight I guess. Tonight was a good night. The Oilers won, and I actually made money at poker! I've been out to play poker with some work buddies and their buddies 7-8 times now, and this is the first time I've actually done more than break even... $47, woohoo! :D

Life is going pretty good right now. I move in with Kris in less than a month, very exciting! Can't wait to have a balcony and a kitty :). My place now actually just got 4 more new roommates. With them came 2 bunnies, 2 guinea pigs, and a tarantula! They had 2 or 3 kitties as well, but they won't be joining them until Frankie and myself have completely moved out, with us being allergic and all. The coolest thing about them moving in is that they're turning the garage/loft into a recording studio. They're ambitious for sure. I can't wait to see a finished product. It's all coming together pretty quickly. I'm very impressed.

Work is going great. I got my first performance evaluation today and it went excellent. I've packed on a few pounds the last couple months, but I'm trying to get rid of that the best I can. It's so easy to be lazy with a desk job and a car, but I've been getting better. Lately I've been getting to the gym 3 times a week, I'm signed up for softball at work (although it's been rained out every game so far), and I'm also signed up for ultimate frisbee on Tuesday nights. I've only played one night so far, but it was two of the most tiring hours of my life. The amount of running you have to do is ridiculous! As long as those games don't keep getting rained out as well, I should be in pretty good shape by the end of summer :).

On the flipside of that, up until a couple weeks ago it had been very hard to keep active. It's only mid-june and already this summer I've sprained my right ankle 3 times. Sprains are so hard because once you sprain it once, it's so easy to sprain again. I learned that the hard way. I finally gave in and bought a strong brace for it. Definitely cost a pretty penny, but I think it's worth it if it will keep me playing sports all summer.

Well... that's about all I can think of right now, but I'm sure there's more. There was a trip to Bangor, a new digital camera for Kris, some pretty new shoes... but I don't want to bore y'all. I updated, that should be enough. :)

Goodnight!

Hear ye! Hear ye!

Contrary to popular belief, Will is indeed still alive and well!

Holy crap does a full-time job ever cut into a person's free time... I apologize for completely disappearing for the past 3 months. Tonight I stopped trying to convince myself that I was going to eventually come on here and post this big huge entry. Truth is I can't even remember what crazy events have happened to me this past quarter-year. So, I guess the best I can do is recap the biggest and best of what I can remember (which, knowing how my memory works, probably won't span more than the last couple weeks).

- As of January 8, it has now been one year with my beautiful Kris :). We celebrated in late January by taking a road-trip down to Quebec City for the winter carnival. It was by far the worst weather I've ever driven in (I won't get into details). Although the weekend was cut short because of weather, it was definitely a good time. I'm very glad we got to go, and I'm more than glad to have the memories :).

- I am now happily employed for another year. My contract on the base in Gagetown was recently renewed for another year, until the end of March 2007. Yay for job security! :)

- As of July 1, Kris and I will be shackin' up in a 3rd floor apartment not too far from where she is now. We'll have a balcony facing Regent St, and will no doubt soon be the proud parents of a little kitty. :)

Seriously, that's all I can remember right now. That's terrible! :) Ah well, it's tired, I'm late ;), and I think it's time for bed. Hope you guys are all doing well!

[Current Music |ben harper - like a king]

Wow. Has it really been a month and a half since my last real entry? Well, I guess there's not much I can do about that except try to remember what's happened in the last little while...

Well, I guess work is the most obvious. The job is going absolutely fantastic. There has been a big project going on around the office, so I think I've been showing my worth pretty good :). Also, with it being a government job in December, I think I'm making more than a couple people jealous... ah, cushy government jobs... :).

On a related note, there have been quite a few events going on around work. Let's see... I played in a little "Sergeant and under" vs "Senior Officers" hockey game not too long ago. Damn it felt good to be on the ice. The first period my legs felt like lead, but after that I did pretty good :). Also in sports, I've taken up squash at the base gym during many of my lunch hours. We even have a little office "squash ladder" going on, where you kinda compete against each other to get to the top spot. Unfortunately, I'm kinda in no-man's land right now. I can easily beat all the other players who, like me, had not played squash before joining the ladder. However, I can't exactly compete with any of the players who have previous experience yet. I'm not bad, but I still can't take a game off any of them. So much fun though.

There's also been a couple little parties to talk about. The office had their Christmas party a couple weeks ago. It was a mix between military people and civilians. Kris and I were easily the youngest there. It was still a good time though, despite having the worst dj ever. First off, to try to get people on the dance floor after supper, he started off a mainly 40+ old crowd with the Black Eyed Peas. I loved looking at those confused faces :). Secondly, more than once he would stop in the middle of a song if no one was dancing, say something stupid, then move on to the next song. He would also play horrible requests that he had never heard of, which still nobody would dance to. Lastly, at least once he would have at least a 30-second gap between songs as he rooted around for another cd. It was brutal.

Frankie and Kris also had their Christmas parties this past weekend. They were both pretty low-key, but still very enjoyable. Lots of friends, lots of talking and laughs, a little bit of drinking... it was definitely a good time. :)

Speaking of Christmas, Kris and I are getting very excited. We both pretty much have all our Christmas shopping done, which is unheard of for me. Usually I'm a day-or-two before Christmas type of shopper. This is much less stressful :). Also, we decorated her apartment pretty nice too, christmas tree and all! Damn that first Christmas is expensive, but it's all reusable for next year. :)

Well, I guess I've rambled on enough tonight. I can't exactly talk about everything :). Well, at least I know that if I'm too tired to write everything out, then I actually must have a shred of a life ;). I will mention a couple things quickly though...

Last night... Planet Smashers show at the Cellar. Awesome time, awesome show, less than awesome crowd. Kris and I also finally got to see "40 Year Old Virgin". Such a funny movie.

Also not too long ago... Frankie and I went to see "The Chronicles of Narnia". I thoroughly enjoyed that as well. Hopefully Frankie arrived in Portugal ok, and I hope she has a great time over the break! :)

happy birthday to me :) [Oct. 29th, 2005|03:27 pm]
[Current Mood |cheerful]
[Current Music |smashing pumpkins - tonight, tonight]

Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday yesterday! It was definitely one to remember! :D

Biggest news? As of yesterday, I am now a proud owner of a new car! I now have a navy blue 2005 Toyota Echo for the next five years. It definitely feels weird saying that. My car. Mine. :) I have to tell you, yesterday at work was one of the longest days ever. I was going crazy waiting to get out to pick my new toy up at the dealership. So, of course, part of yesterday was spent driving around enjoying it :). I definitely gave it a rough first day though. Nothing serious, just adding a little character to my car (which I hope to put back on and buff out later... hehe...).

Anyways... more big news - I am now officially part of Canada's National Defense ;). I started work at my new job in Gagetown on Monday. I'm so excited to get back into some programming. Everyone there seems very nice, and the work seems like it's going to be very interesting. I was part of a new batch of three employees, though they also hired two others a few months back. Out of the five of us, I'm by far the youngest. The next youngest is 28 I think, most of them are in their 30s or 40s, and they all seem to have quite a bit more experience than me. I definitely have some catching up to do, but I feel pretty honored to have been hired with some pretty sharp guys :).

Well, I'm off to shower. Waking up early this past week (and having a halloween/birthday party last night) has forced me to sleep in and laze around in my room til almost 3pm. Talk to y'all later! :)

Ok, who out there has a car?

If I can afford it, I'm looking to lease something small that's good on gas (like an Echo, Ion, Focus, Elantra, etc...). It's basically a commuter car. I just want to know what you guys recommend. Do you like the car you have now? Is there anything out there I should stay away from? All opinions are welcome, but I guess they would be more relevant if they were about a new car recently purchased or leased (as opposed to an older used car). Nonetheless, any comments about a certain dealership in general are great too. Thanks!

[Current Music |coldplay - the hardest part]

I'm fiiiinally getting my first listen of Coldplay's X&Y. I've been wanting to hear it for so long, but buying the cd was never in my budget. It still isn't, but I found out tonight that my roommate Mel has the cd. I'm burning it as I type. It sounds incredible. :)

Today was my last day at CompuSmart. It went well :). It was nice and quiet, they got me a card and a little cake, and I got to say goodbye to pretty much everyone. It was probably one of the most enjoyable jobs I've ever had. Hopefully I can say the same about my next one :).

Tonight I stayed in and watched Lord of The Rings with Frankie. I say watched, but really I mean I watched the first and last 25 minutes or so and slept through the rest :). I almost did the same last night watching CSI with Mel. Not enough sleep lately apparently. Anyways, part of the idea of watching the movie downstairs was to test out my new speakers on a dvd player. I must say, they sound absolutely phenomenal in the movie setting! Great sound, nice rumbling bass when it's needed. It more than makes up for their average performance on my computer with music.

Last night and today I downloaded last season's finale of CSI - the one that was guest directed by Quentin Tarantino. I've been wanting to see it for awhile, and after watching a new episode with Mel last night I got the urge to look for it. Anyways, I must say, I think it was one of the most intense tv episodes I've ever seen. Soooo good!

I think i mentioned a couple posts ago that I finally secured transportation to my new job? Or did I...? Anyways, turns out I'll be able to carpool with an old friend every day. The only downside is how early I'm going to have to wake up. Out of the 3 guys I'm carpooling with, 2 of them need to be at work at 8am (like me). The other has to be there for 7:30am. It turns out that I'm kinda out of the way. I'm downtown and they pass by uptown. So... basically I'm going to have to get myself uptown at the malls by 7am. That means taking the bus that leaves at 6:15am. That also means waking up probably somewhere around 5am. Ugh. I'm glad to have the ride and all, but I think that's some strong incentive to keep searching for a car for myself. :) I'll probably do a bit more looking tomorrow if I'm able.

Btw Dawn, you were wondering what my schedule was going to be like the next little while? It seems like I'll probably be working 8-4 days during the week.

Anyways, I think that's it for tonight. This is quite a few lj posts for me lately. Seems like I need to find another way to hear myself talk with Kris gone :). She comes back tomorrow, but hopefully I'll keep updating once in awhile. Gotta keep you guys up to date right? :)

This Coldplay album is amazing. :)

Oh, and Happy Birthday Krista! :)

Night y'all!

How much does your computer cost?

The new top-of-the-line computer from Apple, the PowerMac G5 Quad, retails for $3999.99 (Canadian). Let's price one, but while we're at, let's max this baby out!

- upgrade RAM: 512MB to 16GB (add $14280)
- upgrade hard drive: 250GB to 2 x 500GB (add $1050)
- upgrade video card: GeForce 6600 to Quadro FX 4500 (add $1980)

But oh wait, we need a monitor! Since we can hook up 2 at the same time, let's get a couple of those nice Apple Cinema Displays.

- add monitors: two 30" Apple Cinema Displays (add $5999)

Final total? A low, low price of only $27309.00!!!

Want to get sicker than this? Well, on this computer we can add 3 more of those video cards, which can handle two more monitors each. What does that mean? Yup, that's 6 more monitors to make a total of 8. What would be the price of that?

...over $51000.00.

pretty good day [Oct. 20th, 2005|01:22 am]
[Current Mood |sleepy]
[Current Music |smashing pumpkins - to forgive]

I got some good news today. :) I secured some transportation for my new job through an old friend Brian. I used to go to school with him at UNB. I lost touch with him for awhile, but ran into him again about a month ago, and we began to chat on and off again. He's been with the military for a little while now, so it was a nice coincidence :).

On top of that, I worked an extra 3 hours today (9-8), and in return I now get Saturday off! One extra day to get ready! :)

Tonight after work I walked home in the light rain. For whatever reasons, I haven't been making the trek up or down the hill nearly as often as I used to. It's a shame in a way because it really is therapeutic. It takes about 45 minutes to make the walk, but it doesn't seem that long most nights. I enjoy just letting my mind wander. I find it helps me make sense of a lot of the stuff going on around me. It's hard to do that when you're always driving, cabbing, or taking a bus somewhere. When you do that, most of your time is spent working or doing something "productive", and it really takes away from the time I think everybody needs to just decompress and take everything in.

Ah well, time for bed. G'night.

soon i'll have more to say [Oct. 18th, 2005|01:29 am]
[Current Mood |sleepy]
[Current Music |jewel - hands]

Well, my time's almost up at my old job. I'm a very hard worker and I'm good with customers, but I just wasn't cut out to be a salesman, so it won't be any big loss (for me or the company) when I leave. I'm excited yet concerned about my upcoming job in Gagetown. I'm quite behind in getting prepared. I still need to secure transportation, and I need some decent clothes. My only 2 black dresspants that I own are now faded to an almost-green or starting to get stained. Time is running out on me, and I only have one day off until day 1, and that is the Sunday the day before.

Kris is spending a week in Riverview. She's on a one-week internship at our old high school for her Education program. I'm sure it's a little weird, but I hope she's faring ok :).

Last weekend we went up to Bathurst with Joey, his girlfriend, and the rest of their family for a cousin's wedding. It was only my first wedding and second reception I've attended since I was a tiny kid. The four of us felt quite a bit out of place most of the time. For one, the ceremony was in french. Secondly, everything was hardcore Catholic. Third, the band at the reception played country music almost exclusively. Not exactly our thing, but at least I had the Catholic upbringing and french immersion. I could at least understand a bit, and everything was familar from the regular mass I used to attend.

Not to be rude, but the wedding itself was understandably quite boring for us. Although I was brought up Catholic, I'm not an overly religious person, especially when it comes to church and organized religion. When I ever do get married, I can't see it being in a church. Everything seemed so void of emotion, most of all the signing of the papers. I'd want something a lot more engaging and intimate. The reception was fun, but mostly because of the addition of alcohol and a lot of drunk Lovelocks milling around :). Kris' dad, her uncle, and her grandfather all got plastered. It was a sight to see! :)

Ok, on to something else... I bought myself an early birthday present at work with some money from my parents (while I still get my discount). I bought these Logitech Z-2300 speakers:

I'm not 100% satisfied with them, but I'm not disappointed either. It turns out that for a lot of music, these speakers can sometimes give overpowering bass, and it can be near-impossible to tone it down. I had to EQ the hell out of the things in iTunes, but they at least sound quite good now. For an extra $30 I could have gotten an arguably better-sounding but bulkier and uglier set of speakers. I'm not sure if I made the right choice, but overall I'm still quite happy.

Anyways, I'm getting pretty tired so I'm gonna head to bed. Congrats to anyone making it through that read. Night y'all! :)

I think I may have gotten more stolen from me than I had originally thought. Kevin asked me tonight if I had some Smashing Pumpkins dvd's as that's what Frankie told him. I totally forgot about those, and now I can't find them. So, if those got stolen, I'm missing two box sets of the Simpsons, Eternal Sunshine, and two Pumpkins dvds. That's like $200 worth of stuff, and those last two piss me off the most. They mean a lot to me. Hopefully I can find them again someday, but first I'm gonna have to get some money to pay for it all. That fucker. I felt like punching through a wall earlier. Thankfully Kevin was downstairs playing Mario Kart. It was a much needed distraction.

[Current Mood |verbose]
[Current Music |john mayer - no such thing]

Well, I guess it's about time for a real update. I don't even know what to write about...

I've been working a lot lately. Probably too much. What with moving our store's location and being short-staffed, 11+ hour days have been too common lately. I'm still waiting on security clearance for the Gagetown job. I did however run into a guy at CompuSmart who I wrote one of the tests with. I got talking to him and he's apparently just waiting on security clearance as well. I have a feeling he was #1 on the eligibility list. Anyways, last he heard the tentative start date is October 11, so almost any news is good news at this point.

Because of working so often, I've also been spending an awful lot of time with Kris at her place. It's a 45 minute walk from my place to work, and less than 10 minutes from hers. Of course I love spending time there with her, but I wish my place was closer to work. I feel bad not being able to hang out with my roommates much.

My friend Heather got back from Germany not too long ago. I can't wait to see some pictures! :)

I've been slightly addicted to that tv show "So You Think You Can Dance?". It's so much more entertaining than those singing idol shows. I can't stand to watch those anymore. Too much praise for such amateurish singing. I'm not saying they're not good or don't deserve encouragement, but they shouldn't be making such a big deal out of them. I saw one episode of that "INXS" show, and those guys blow the Idols into next week.

As much as I love my job, I'm hoping so much for Gagetown. I want a car. I need money to afford a car. I want to get out of here. It's been too long since I've left the confines of the city. Anybody know a good place for a 23-year-old male with a clean record to get car insurance? I should get some quotes soon.

While our other roommate Jack was living here, we apparently had a lot of stuff stolen. We all suspect one of Jack's friends was a klepto. Frankie and Mel lost their "Kill Bill" movies, Frankie lost her "Evil Dead" trilogy, and I think I lost a couple seasons of "The Simpsons". I used to have the first four seasons, but I'm now missing 2 and 3. We have an extra copy of season 3 at home, but it still sucks. I only mention it because yesterday I realized that I think my "Eternal Sunshine" was stolen as well. I was so in the mood to watch it the other night. Speaking of getting things ripped off, the store also just had a $2000+ tablet laptop stolen recently. Mel's boyfriend's jeep was broken into a couple nights ago too. People suck sometimes.

Reading about Katrina online and in magazines is heartbreaking. There aren't too many stories out there that have made me as sad as this one. How Bush's administration handled the recovery effort makes me sick. Jon Stewart is my hero. I'm finally getting his book read that I got for Christmas.

I have the entire upcoming weekend off. I was supposed to work Friday, but I worked tonight to get someone out of a jam, and he offered to take my Friday shift off my hands. Three day weekend! Maybe I can spend some time with Alicia, Dawn, or Brian. Hopefully the cafe venture is going good for Brian and his buds. It's very exciting!

We have two new roommates this year. Jack, Sadie, and Gary are out (and have been for a little while now), and Mel and Kevin are in. They seem incredibly nice. Should be good living with them. Best thing about it is I shouldn't have to worry about my stuff disappearing. :)

My friend Lisa messaged me to tell me that she just found out someone she knows in Fredericton has an extra Pearl Jam ticket. Too bad the concert is tomorrow night and I work. Ah well, I pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn't be going a long time ago. I'm finding out the details out of curiosity, but I'm 99% sure I won't be able to do anything about it.

Anyways, I think I've bored enough people by now. :) Night y'all!

for those old school gamers... (geeky entry) [Sep. 16th, 2005|09:51 pm]

[Current Music |jimmy eat world - just watch the fireworks]

I used to play video games a lot as a kid. I don't much anymore. It's probably a result of games becoming too long, perhaps a bit too complex or boring, and having less free time and money. The old games I used to play I still love, and still play when I have the chance. Apparently, Nintendo is trying to get back to that state of simplicity and innovation. They come out with a new system called the Revolution next year, and they just unveiled the controller yesterday. It has definitely peaked my interest.

It is a wireless controller that has motion sensors in it so you can control it like a wand, or use it to point, drag, shoot, etc. It even senses depth, rotation, and twisting. You can also turn it on its side or get add-ons to simulate traditional-style one-piece controllers. It's kinda hard to describe, so I'll post some links to more info:

More Images
Promo Video: controller in action
Article and Review

Perhaps the coolest feature will be with the system itself. This is what got me excited a few months back. Apparently you'll be able to download and play on the system (for a fee) almost every game ever created by Nintendo going back to the original NES. How cool is that?

Btw, for those who are downloading that video, it may take a couple watches to figure out what the people are doing with the controller. Here's what it looks like to me: playing hockey, chopping and frying veggies, conducting, drumming, playing baseball, fishing, operating on a patient, playing mario, using a flashlight in a haunted house, (no idea), first person shooter, swatting flies, and swordfighting. If anybody can figure out that other one, lemme know :).
